Columbus

In our Medieval travels this year we came across Christopher Columbus.

We found him in:

Mystery of History

 Story of the World

Columbus and Sons

Synge - Discovery of Worlds

Around the World in a Hundred Years

If You Were There in 1492

More books, but very specifically about Christopher Columbus that we also read:

This last one - we started reading, but haven't go to the end - YET.

And if you know me, you know I just HAD to go and make some worksheets / printables.   That's why I am 'The Paper Maid'.  There HAS to be some paper in there somewhere.

A color cover page.

A few describe / what we know about ( insert - Columbus, King Ferdinand, Queen Isabella ) worksheets.

Some writing paper.

And out of the blue - with nothing to do with Columbus at all, I threw in some Homophone work.

There are 7 pages of Homophones.

And a couple of pages to practice using said homophones.

And just in case your kiddos are all written out, they could just cut up a page of homophones and glue them back together again.

And the best part is that this little packet is currently FREE - for a limited time.  Just click any picture to go and get yourself a copy.

Thanks for visiting.

Oh, and for fun I'm linking up with Teaching Fourth again this week.  I hope you will join us.

Bible ABC's

A few years ago, ok, 4 years ago I started making these little memory verse cards.  The file I found this morning dates it back to 2008.

Today I want to share what we used them for.

Simple copywork.

Beginner memory verse work.

When I pulled out Chloe's old book she had a revived desire to do some more, so we're going to do a few more until school finishes up.

If you'd like a copy just click each set separately.

As for God, his way is perfect.

Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.

Commit your way to the Lord.

Thanks for visiting.

Science - Food

This week for Science I put away our normal American curriculum so that we could focus on using an Australian curriculum.

This is a BLM ( Black Line Master ).  It has a full years curriculum that one can cover in it.

They have a whole stack of teacher stuff in the front of the book too.  Things like forms, links to frameworks etc...

In particular we looked at the theme - Food.

Here are worksheets that we did:

Needs or Wants

Food for Plants and Animals

Digestion

Food - Assessment page

There was another worksheet in there but we skipped that one.

A great starting point if I ever need some direction for Science topics.

Penmanship

One of the things that I really wanted to get done this year was to get Chloe up and running with cursive handwriting.  This is the year that she did Grade 2.

So I just thought that I'd drop in and show you a couple of current samples of how it's going.

It reads:

How cool was the
shadow the long
branches gave,
As they hung from the
willow, and dipp'd
in the wave.

It reads:

And all the beauty of the place,
Is in thy heart and on thy face.

She is left handed.   I think that she has made some good progress, albeit there is still room for great improvement, but at least she has begun cursive handwriting.

First Grade Common Core

Did you ever want to take the stress off from trying to figure out WHAT to teach during the year?

What about having to FIND resources and worksheets?

Ever dream about finding an already made book that did all the hard work for you?

Well, guess what?   I found something that would totally free your time up.

Now you'll be able to sip marguiettas on the weekend instead of writing up lesson plans, worksheets for each week, and linking it all into the frameworks.

Ok, you might still want to tweak a few things in your classroom and make cool worksheets, just for fun, but if you would rather laze in the sun, or ski in the winter, Common Core will have you covered.

Go visit them~!!

"This First Grade Common Core Workbook is the largest collection of resources for teaching the Common Core State Standards. This workbook includes over 550 pages of Worksheets, Activity Centers, and Posters that teach all the First Grade English Language Arts Common Core Standards and all the First Grade Mathematics Common Core Standards! This Workbook will be emailed to you shortly after you place your order. "

BUT if you'd like a FREE copy of their book, click HERE.

Don't wait.  Offer ends Sept 30th.

Apple Maths

There are some really GREAT things out there on the internet~!!

I had an awesome time printing, laminating, and cutting things to get ready for this weeks Apple Maths.

These Apple cards came from Alison at Oopseydaisy. She has a whole packet that can be downloaded off the net - yep, for FREE.

So we got out the pegs for Hannah to count and peg.  She thought it was great fun.

After Hannah had her play with it, Miss Phebe had her turn, but instead of using pegs she just ordered them.

This next lot of printables came from Amy Lattin in her FREE Apple Number Puzzle download.

So Hannah tried out counting 1 - 5.

Then Chloe also did some for her 10's and 5's.

The girls are really enjoying this theme so far.  I expect that their enthusiasm will last until I say it's time to do some writing.  But that's the way things go.

Thanks for visiting.

Apple Crafts

We started our Apple theme this week with some good old fashioned crafts.

We tried a paper piecing of an apple.

We did a paper plate apple.

We even tried real apple painted prints.

It started out great.   I had high hopes that it would go off well.

But this 3rd activity  ...........  turned out to be a flop.   It was difficult for the girls to get good prints, and soon they got paint on the outside of the apple - which proved to be the end of it all as the skin became very slippery making it nigh impossible to get a print at all.

But the idea was there.

Tomorrow I'll show you some of the Maths ideas we did with the Apple theme.

Also - have you seen my Apple FREEBIE that I posted on Sunday?

Coloring for Medieval History

This year we did Medieval History, and here are the coloring books that we used for fun.

They come from Dover.

I love that they tell a story with the pictures.  It makes it good not only for coloring, but learning as well.

During the year I gave them the odd page or two, but now that we are nearing the end of our school year I just gave the girls the remaining books to color in at their leisure.  They aren't very expensive, so that is a bonus.

Apples - limited time FREEBIE

Yesterday I went on a search for materials for an apple theme.  I picked up some great ideas and worksheets along the way.   I also put a whole stack of them in their own album on Pinterest if you want to check that out too.

Then this morning I just thought that I'd add a little more to it, to personalize it for my own children.  Things that they can work on, for where they are.

I made a little cover page, which I laminated this morning and stuck on the front of a file folder.  That way I can keep all the printables etc.. ready in there waiting.

I added 3 different writing pages.   One for Kindergarten level, one for Grade 1 level, and one for Grade 2 level.  That is pretty much where Hannah, Phebe, and Chloe are respectively.

I also added a word sort for 6 multiple phonograms.

There are two pages for the word sorts like this.

Here's all the words for the word sorts.

I've also put in a little game board - which I'm still developing in my mind as to how we will use it.

You can grab this file as a FREEBIE for a limited time.

Thanks for visiting.

School Update

This week I had to go back to a tick list for Chloe.

Things are so hectic, chaotic, and demanding that I was getting totally frazzled with trying to juggle it all.   Having a lot of little itsy bitsy children at your feet really hinders being able to focus and get the school work done with the older children.

But I am a girl on a mission.

Very goal orientated.  Yes, I am.

We have now finished Mystery of History.   Yahoo~!!  Doing a happy dance.

Then today we did lesson 142 in Maths, and there are only 170 lessons in the course - that means there are only 28 lessons to go.  Making progress people.  Can you see the light at the end of the tunnel?

We're going to up the Spelling a little more by focusing more on the syllabification.  So on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays when she comes to do her copywork for her words she'll copy them like normal on the left hand side and then work on the syllabification on the right hand columns.  Hopefully this will see a marked improvement with her dictations.

Spelling is one of them "hard" things for Chloe as you can see with her pre-test here.

Only 5 more weeks to go.

Only 5 more weeks to go.

Yep, only 5 more weeks to go.

And then we can relax, think about next year, do some prep work, and just PLAY.

This week I'm linking up with Kelly at Teaching Fourth.  I hope you will join us~!!
