Charlotte is 7 now......

Charlotte is now a brand new fresh 7 year old, so I thought I'd do a journal entry for where she is currently in her Math.

Rod and Staff Grade 3, lesson 98.

Doing Division.....

for her 6x tables on top, and a mixture on bottom.

Then we continue to do some more in fraction form, and of course a few written questions as well.

So yep, that is where Charlotte is up to these days.  

What Charlotte is Reading These Days

Charlotte has just turned 7.

This is the level/ability and where she is in her reading:

She is almost finished with this book, which will bring us to the end of the Grade 1 course particularly soon, and well before the end of the year - so that we'll actually have a couple of months free.  We'll probably detour a little after that before jumping to the Grade 2 materials, but I dunno, we'll see what she thinks when we get there, and what she might want to do.

Another Outline AND a Paragraph

Today we did another outline walk through.....

and then she used her outline to write her own paragraph.

In hindsight I should have given her specialised lined writing paper  { 3rds } - which would of helped her with her neatness and spacing, but at any length, still pretty happy with her first outline to paragraph outcome.

I should also be more diligent to have her sit when she is happy, and not ticked off, but that is a note for me.....  ha ha ha.

 The more she practices, the more natural and more detailed her writing will become.  

Charlotte's First Official Outline

Charlotte { 6y11m } did her very first official and formal outline this morning:

First, she read the passage aloud, then she answered the comprehension questions.

Then we went back and looked for the key words with which to build her paragraph outline.

I. Main Idea

a. detail

b. detail

c. detail

etc..

So, instead of just getting her to narrate to me a main idea sentence based on a paragraph, now, we are looking very closely to key words in many sentences to build a paragraph.

At some point we'll also start the re-writing of the paragraph based on her own outline.

Charlotte and the Last Unit of Grade 1 Reading

It's official, Charlotte has now started Unit 6 of her Grade 1 Reading.  It's the last unit of the course in fact.  We'll be finished soon... crazy..... but yes, then we'll detour a little in between before we start Grade 2.

As you can see the stories are getting very much larger and longer.

So for that reason, when we are done with this unit we'll be taking a serious detour before hitting up the new year.

I haven't settled on what the detour will be just yet, but yeah, I'll let you know.

Charlotte and Division

Another jump today.  Charlotte has officially started Division.

Today's lesson:

I always teach division in the language of a child, ie. using lollies for the explanation. ha ha ha, they get it every time. And then I showed her how it works with multiplication.

End of May Update on Charlotte { 6y 9m }

Here's where Charlotte was roughly by the end of May.  She's currently in Grade 1 according to the public schedule, but as you'll see, homeschooling has allowed a little more wiggle room to accommodate her more appropriately.

Charlotte has continued with her character copywork and is now at the end of Creativity.

{ Math }

In the maths department Charlotte is making exceptional gains.

As of posting this particular photo, Charlotte is actually past the 40th lesson and has started official multiplication in all earnest.

{ Reading } 

She is thoroughly enjoying reading her Rod and Staff Nurture reader.  There has been a hidden blessing in not doing too much in the way of Bible Stories with her previously to this.  As she reads each story for herself.... she is scandalised, captivated, entirely intrigued by the content of each story as she goes on through.  Not having those basic Bible story backgrounds already - it has shocked her at some of the content, and thus kept her completely interested in reading.

Here's a recent story that she's read.  Yep, this is considered Grade 1.  The story actually goes over to the next page.  She reads these out loud to me so that if there is any need for help or correction I am right there to address any problem immediately.

{ Science } 

We're having some down time with Science and keeping it light with a little detour on the Water Cycle.  I'll be looking to start a new topic soon though.

{ Penmanship }

Another thing that Charlotte has been regularly attending to this month was cursive handwriting.

{ History } 

We also continue with SOTW II.  I've moved it to Fridays so that we can be free to spend that read aloud time on Mondays and Wednesdays on another History book.

Random Week 18 Update

Some random photos of some of the things we did for school this week.

Charlotte continued to work on Silent Letters.

As of today she has completed the first 10 lessons in Unit 5.

Hannah and Phebe started Lesson 11 in their Vocabulary / Spelling words.  Technically it's designed to work with Wordly Wise Book 6, but we're using it as a spelling program at the moment.

The girls all hit up workbook 6 in their respective years.

Phebe wrote a composition and then typed it up.  It was a really nice one.   She'd talked about Mothers Day.  

Noah worked on his little activities.

Here he did a pasting activity.

I've decided to post Chloe's A0 notebooking pages as a separate post.  Look for those tomorrow.

Grade 1 Rod and Staff Reading and Phonics Unit 5

When you make school work a form of currency, you can bet that you are going to finish sooner rather than later.  In our case Charlotte finished quite a bit sooner - it helps when you have special chocolate available in your 'shop' for your child to earn money and purchase.

Today Charlotte { 6y9m } will begin the Grade 1, Unit 5 of the Rod and Staff Reading and Phonics.

Yep, they consider this to be Grade 1 work....  I am quite impressed by their ambition, but I'm pretty confident that Charlotte will be able to do the work just fine.  It is a step up from the previous book but now we'll be reading full on stories each and every day.

The first phonics lesson for unit 5.  It actually goes over to a second double page set up as well.  So 4 pages are devoted to some sort of phonics each day.

And the reading workbook - which is just 2 pages for each lesson and compliments the reading text.

And that brings us to only 60 more days before Grade 1 will be entirely done and dusted in the reading and phonics departments.

These early years just go by so quickly.

Charlotte Officially Starting Grade 3 Math

It's is now official....

Charlotte has started Grade 3 Math.  She's still 6 though.

Today she started her 5x and 10 x multiplication cards.

And did you know that you can teach multiplication with Touch Math?

I'm off to raid the cupboards for other multiplication helps.

More Memories of Charlotte

I need to document more memories for Charlotte of her school work, so this is where I'm putting them.  :)

She has now started her last Unit for Grade 2 Math......

Plenty of carrying and borrowing....

And because the above Math curriculum is American and we are in Australia, I just swapped out the currency in the book for an Australian currency activity center instead.
