A Montessori Pack for the Letter Aa

Today I wanted to share my Montessori Pack for the Letter Aa.

I don't know if I'll make any more, but we'll see.

In the mean time I thought that it might be of some use to you if you are:

teaching the letter Aa,
or numbers to 12,
or doing an apple theme,
or ant theme.

It comes with an anchor chart.

Some 3 part cards in color.

 

The same 3 part cards in black and white to save your ink.

Some mini books for the children to practice writing.

Some counting cards.

 

Cards with no numbers, so you could match them up to the set before.

 

And there's an apple set too. 

It's 30 pages.

Folding - A Montessori Activity

This week Noah practised folding his little face washers.

A simple activity for eye-to-hand co-ordination.

A great little activity to practice detail and patience in attaining the detail.

He actually really enjoyed this activity.

Find a Way

I found this neat little activity at a local second hand shop while I was out perusing for books.

It has a main board with pathway pieces.  The idea is to take a card from the box and then make the pathway from one animal to the other.

It gets more complicated when trying to do both sets at the same time.

Just something I found by accident, but I think will be a great little activity to re-visit as we go along.

Laminating Day

Today I had a laminating day....

I had my stash of printables all good to go....

Surprisingly, it didn't take as long as I thought it would, but I was solid on getting them cut asap as they came out of the laminator.

Birds and their eggs.  It's supposed to be 3 part cards, but I decided that we should only cut them to two to begin with.  They are absolutely gorgeous, and I've already had a lot of interest from the children about them.

Just making the most of the laminating and preschool stuff, since Noah is the last baby - and I won't need them after him.

Preschool Memory

A fun new game that Noah is enjoying is 'Memory'.

They're wood with a nice varnish, and a sturdy little wooden box to keep them in.

I particularly like that they are REAL pictures of animals.

And because a game of Memory usually has more than one player, Charlotte has been playing with him.

This was a cheap find.  I think from K-Mart for about the $5 or $6 mark.

Montessori Movable Alphabet

I've been tossing to and fro as to whether or not to purchase a moveable alphabet....

in the mean while I figured that we could probably use this printable version instead, well, until I settle on whether we really need a wood version or not.

Montessori Multiplication

Something new that I thought we'd try out:

{ Montessori Multiplication }

It has the same set up as nomenclature cards.

They do do them a little different from what I am used to though.  They say, "10 taken 6 times" where I would normally teach, "6 groups of 10".  Little Miss didn't have any problem though.

And in the same download they also included clip cards as well.

There were actually quite a lot of varied resources included, but yes, these are the ones that I printed and laminated for a bit of use.

Sorting by Color

Here's another little Montessori activity you can put on your shelves.  It's just a color sorting activity.

I sourced the cubes from a $2 store - they are actually meant to be used as frozen drink cubes { ice cubes in your drink }.  But I figured that they'd make a great little sorting activity, with a small set of tongs for Noah.

Just have some little plastic bowls available.  Tip all the cubes out into a messy pile and have the child use the tongs to sort them into their colors.  He also had some little white rocks in his initial pile. 

He really enjoyed this activity.

Noah is 3 - so if you have a 3 year old, give it a try.  :)

Dominoes in Your Montessori Basket

Here's another activity that I have in my Montessori shelf.

It has a reasonable amount of dominoes.  Not bajillions, but a reasonable amount.  Probably perfect for Noah though at a beginning stage.  I would of liked more in the box because it won't take long before he figures out what he's doing and he'll need an activity that will take more than 5 mins to do.

I explained how to play and join them up.

Then I moved him to the floor to complete his activity.

As an additional note Noah is already returning activities to his shelf once completed.  That is one of the reasons that I really wanted to set things up in a Montessori fashion; I really wanted him to learn to put things away when he was done.  I'm happy with his progress.

Matching Numerals

Here's an old laminated set that I had in one of my tubs that we are now able to use with Noah.  

On the left hand side of each matching pair is the left hand with a numeral.  The child simply finds the matching right hand numeral to team them back up together.

How I placed them on the tray.  I decided to only do a few at a time to begin with.

Now, it's been many, many years since I found this free online, somewhere, and I cannot remember where they are found.  If I remember though, or find them again, I'll come back and let you know.

Montessori Continents Matching

I went and found a free continent set for Noah to play matching with. I also laminated it so that he could use it over a long period of time.  I didn't cut the labels off separately though.  I figured I'd wait until he's really good with the matching part first.

In this particular set there is a grey scale set included.  So I put them on his tray like this:

And then I had him match the continents to their match.

Setting Up Our First Montessori Environment

This week I set up our first dedicated Montessori Environment / Shelf for Noah { 3 }.

How the shelf looks all together:

Wooden Place value numbers and phonogram cards on top.  I really wanted them super easy access to encourage frequent use.

I also put his work tray on the top too.  Here I have 4 activities available to try out.  We'll also be using this tray for all sorts of things, including our salt work.

1.  Picture and alphabet matching

2. Upper and lowercase alphabet matching

3. Number and value matching

4. Numeral matching

Inside these tubs I have alphabet sets and peg clip cards.

Down below I have allocated a tub for his Touch Math numerals and foam dots.

On this shelf I placed a wooden base 10 set and his salt

{ for tray work }. 

On the left I put in a little clip board and pad/pen in case he wants to have a little scribble.  On the right a jigsaw and some counting cards.

Down the bottom we have sorting trays and rocks.  I also have a couple of mats for him to use when he takes activities to the table.

On the left are sorting tubs and little plastic ice cubes.  On the right I have some face washers for folding.

And of course a tub full of wooden jigsaws.

Playdough tools, envelopes full of Montessori activities { most too advance for him currently, but he'll move into them eventually. }

Yes, so that is today's set up.  As we start progressing through activities I am sure to add and subtract to the shelf, but I am very happy to have made a start.
