The Legend of Ulysses

Now, while it's true to some large extent that I haven't been one for much mythology in our homeschool journey, even when we were very devoted to doing Classical Education many years ago, I will still put some on the shelves occasionally.  It's more or less about ensuring that the children have a broader awareness of literature and vocabulary than anything else.

At any rate, I wasn't particularly looking for anything in this particular department while out recently, so when I spied this little treasure, I snatched it up because of the quality of the book itself.

Sometimes book collecting is more about availability and usefulness than getting my wish list fulfilled.

In it's cover there is a handy and helpful map which enables his travels to come more to life.

 Medium type, short chapters, and beautiful illustrations make it an excellent children's book.

An excellent addition to any Ancients year study.

Charlotte Update

Little Miss Grade 1 has now done the first 6 weeks.

I've tried to keep things not too overwhelming, but at the same time, give her a decent amount of school to do each day.

{ English }

Charlotte is now up to LTR 105 - which is half way through the program.  At this point I'm thinking that I'll need to start slowing it down a little - as it does tend to move along rather quickly.  She needs a little time to slow down so that she can build her fluency.  Sure, she can sound out those words in the story, but she needs time to work on getting a smooth consistency in delivery of the sentences so that it actually sounds like a story rather than a list of words.

and because she is in 105, she has also started their Language Arts books as well.

{ Maths }

She's doing awesome with it and just finished lesson 60 yesterday.  At this point we've only just introduced subtraction.

{ History }

This year I have SOTW I back out and in use, and Charlotte really likes it.  I don't make her do a ton of narrations or anything - yet - just nice and easy - listen to the story, and do a little something to leave a paper trail.

We do SOTW on Mondays and Wednesdays.

On Fridays we do a little from this other book.

{ Science }

We've moved into the next topic.  The first topic we looked at living and non-living.  This new topic we are looking at habitats.

{ Cursive Handwriting }

Yep, we've started that too.

{ Bible }

We are making some really good progress through our Bible read aloud.  This week was perfect as it coincided with SOTW!

Yes, so that is todays little catch up on where Charlotte is 6 weeks into the school year.  Obviously there's a heap of little things that round out the days that I haven't included, but I thought I'd still share some of it.

Thanks so much for visiting.

{ Week 24 }

Yesterday I went down to Melbourne for the CHESS seminar.  It was my first day away from baby Noah.  He did well, I did well.

One of the catches for the day was this:

I'd been needing it for Chloe.  It's on the Grade 5 science reading list on Ambleside Online.  I do have a pdf version, but she hadn't started it yet.  It's always best to grab a printed book in preference to having to print them out if you can.  They just take up less room on the shelf.  So I never even hesitated when I saw it in the box.

Another thing I picked up was a new set of flash cards.  Now, it is true I already have a set but they are 19 years old.  They're the old ones that don't have all the RULES on the back.  So, I thought, for convenience sake, I'd get a new set.  I am big on phonics the spalding way and since LEM have based all their stuff on the same, I know it'll be super useful and handy to have for Charlotte and when Noah comes on up.

Also, while there I picked up these 3 books for the precious price of $2 each.  It's like reading their website without having to go there.  I do not subscribe to all their teachings, but I still like to glean from them from time to time.

This week I want to do an update on where we are with our History and Geography.

We continue on with MOH I.

We did skip a few lessons here or there but the last one we did was lesson 96.  Some days the girls have trouble with writing, but I continue to ask them for a basic skeleton outline and a paragraph or so on each passage that they read.

Did I ever mention that both Chloe and Phebe have READ SOTW I this year?  They read it like a novel.

For Geography we continued on with our Country and Flag study.  I continued to source their maps via google.  { So handy, I tell you. }

The girls are really LOVING this subject.

I think we MIGHT do some Earth Science when this subject is finished.  Haven't prepared anything just yet, but I do have a nice little book that we could base things from.  I dunno.  I'll let you know when and if we ever get there.

This week I'll be linking up with:

I hope you will join us.

Thanks for visiting.

{ Week 18 }

Homer

Homer was a bard.  He was a bard because he made books.  People liked him.  And he was a boy.  He will be here if it was the olden days.

Homer made stories when he was young.  He had some fun in his life.  We do not live in books.  He has already died.

Homer was big.  He was kind.  He was happy.  I love doing this.

This week we started SHAKESPEARE!

What am I doing?  ha ha ha.

Nevertheless, we begin with The Tempest.

We also continue with our beloved Plutarch:  Marcus Crassus.

As a side note, did you know that he also wrote 5 hefty volumes on Morals?  Yeah, me either, but I am super interested in them.

A science notebook page before we went away on holidays.

Going to the beach for a look, see.

Checking out the sand.

Peeking out.

A favourite day.

Little tortoises swim.

How you pack for lunch while travelling.

A sketch from Phebe.

A picture of Chloe { now 10 }.

Now, I always find it easier to start new things after returning from holidays.  So on our return Chloe started these two books:

This one I picked up for only $16.50 in a Noosa second hand book shop.  In great condition too!!

Something that's been on the shelves for years.  Chloe will be reading it for Bible time.

I also got quite interested in Samuel Pepys due to Jeanne's post on her blog { A Peaceful Day }.  And low and behold when I got home I found this on my shelf.  I've had it for years and never knew how awesome and handy it would come.  Yay!!  Additionally, I've also ordered myself a copy of his Diaries.  Can't wait for when we finally get to reading it.

Nature Study this week:

I think the girls had fun discovering how a seed splits and allows the root to grow out and begin a plant.

Copywork by Chloe.  In many ways I think this "speeds" up our English lessons.  As in, the time it takes is actually less than what we would normally spend.   The girls find it to be much easier, but also, on the other hand, more instructional than the other different types of English lessons as well.

There's a lady called Amy on TpT that does these Bible Notebooks.  I've purchased a few of her mini lessons.  I really love them, and will buy more.  Here is one: Solomon, we did this one today.  For a $1, you can't go wrong.  I highly recommend them.  :o)

Also in our read alouds this week:

Aborigines
Abraham
Abrasives
Absolute Zero
Acacias
Acceleration
Achilles
Acids

I got the ENTIRE set at market day for a song.  $4 I believe, if my memory serves me well.

Ok, think this might be enough show and tell for the week.

This week I'll be linking up with:

I hope you will join us.

Thanks for visiting.
