Grade 1 Rod and Staff Reading and Phonics Unit 5

When you make school work a form of currency, you can bet that you are going to finish sooner rather than later.  In our case Charlotte finished quite a bit sooner - it helps when you have special chocolate available in your 'shop' for your child to earn money and purchase.

Today Charlotte { 6y9m } will begin the Grade 1, Unit 5 of the Rod and Staff Reading and Phonics.

Yep, they consider this to be Grade 1 work....  I am quite impressed by their ambition, but I'm pretty confident that Charlotte will be able to do the work just fine.  It is a step up from the previous book but now we'll be reading full on stories each and every day.

The first phonics lesson for unit 5.  It actually goes over to a second double page set up as well.  So 4 pages are devoted to some sort of phonics each day.

And the reading workbook - which is just 2 pages for each lesson and compliments the reading text.

And that brings us to only 60 more days before Grade 1 will be entirely done and dusted in the reading and phonics departments.

These early years just go by so quickly.

New Pack: Multiple Phonogram Spelling Worksheet Pack - OU

As it turns out I discovered that we needed to re-visit this particular phonogram again.

I didn't mind.

I loved that idea.

It works out great for not only me, but for you too.

Inside you'll find a color anchor chart, and a black line anchor chart, which I use as an assessment at the end of the week where I let the child color in the words that they can read without assistance.  I've also included a dictation/new list/copywork page.

Then the daily worksheets begin.  The first one is just writing the word to the matching picture. 

Following on we have worksheets where the child circles the correct sounds to make a word and then writes the word.  The next worksheet set is where the child selects the best word to complete the sentence and then does copywork with it in the bottom half of the page.  

And for fun I also included an interactive notebook page for those who keep interactive notebooks.  There are cut and paste words to assist in the lesson.  Instructions are given as well.

Lastly, there are the read, trace, and write pages for all the words/pictures introduced.  There is a print option, and a cursive handwriting option for each set of those.

Teddy Bear Phonogram Flash Cards

Sometimes when you retire items from the store it's nice to be able to go back and pull them out again after a long while when you remember them.  { or need them again }

In this case I pulled out this set this morning and thought, oh, someone else might be able to get some use out of them.  I thought about putting them back in the store, but then I thought they'd make a great little freebie instead.

It actually has 3 sets inside the pack.

The first set is colored has examples of the phonogram in a word, the second has just the phonogram, and the third set is black line.  When using the black lined version have the children write in their own examples of words using each phonogram.

Yeah, one page at a time. :)

Kindergarten and Grade 1 Spelling

One of the things that I love to do in Kindergarten and Grade 1 is to spend some time using Spelling as a way to teach and concrete in those multiple phonograms.

While it is entirely true that you could get through a complete year of spelling and multiple phonograms WITHOUT a curriculum, it just makes things a little more intentional to have the worksheets if you can get them.

At any rate, I've been slowly re-shaping and doing up some new worksheets to accommodate this years spelling.

I've prettied up the files with instructions etc.. and uploaded the first set on TpT.

A Week of Spelling Grade 1

This week Charlotte worked on the { ir } sound for spelling.

Monday

Sort the words with the { ir } sound.

It's a flip book, lift it up and the words are underneath.

On the next page Charlotte wrote a page of words ( and underlined them ) with the { ir } sound in them.

Added to the top of the page as a flip page - on Friday we will see how many of these words she can read by herself and the ones that she gets correct she can color in.

Wednesday

Make the words.

Thursday

Choose a word that will make the sentence complete.

Followed by copywork.

Friday

Choose a word that will make the sentence complete.

Go back and see how many words she can read by herself and color them in.

I'm pretty happy with the competency with the { ir } sound now.

Scrappy Initial Letter Sounds

A few years ago I did an initial letter sound workbook filled with worksheets designed to focus on initial sounds for each letter but since then I've picked up some more great clipart and decided to revamp the original into an upgraded brand new work.

Apart from the new clipart all the way throughout, I also added in the additional task of writing the individual letters of each picture on the page, included more pictures to choose from, and popped in a picture key on each page as well.

So now we have:

Yeah, so I've popped it in the store for $3.00.
You can print them up a bajillion times for yourself/personal family/personal class, but if others want a pack, please send them on to purchase their own.

Decode and Write

I finally decided to separate out these particular types of worksheets and finish off the short vowel sounds since that is where Charlotte is these days.  Then I bundled them up and put them on TpT as well.

If you're interested, there are 10 worksheets in the pack { 2 worksheets x 5 vowels } and I've priced it at $2.00.  You can print them up a bajillion times if you like for personal use.  Priced as if you had only one student, but if you have any more than that, it will make it a bargain buy.

Winter Snow Phonogram Clip Cards

This week we finally got around to trying out this activity.

I decided that I would only print one set of cards, and even then only a black and white version { there are a few sets in the pack for differentiation }.  The color versions look great, but yeah, unless I'm going to laminate them for a center and long term use I'll try and save the colored ink.  Each card is numbered { top left corner } so this means that they can be used as clip cards OR for an activity that requires a recording worksheet. 

Here's Hannah's first go.  It's mostly correct with a couple of tiny errors.
