Random Week 18 Update

Some random photos of some of the things we did for school this week.

Charlotte continued to work on Silent Letters.

As of today she has completed the first 10 lessons in Unit 5.

Hannah and Phebe started Lesson 11 in their Vocabulary / Spelling words.  Technically it's designed to work with Wordly Wise Book 6, but we're using it as a spelling program at the moment.

The girls all hit up workbook 6 in their respective years.

Phebe wrote a composition and then typed it up.  It was a really nice one.   She'd talked about Mothers Day.  

Noah worked on his little activities.

Here he did a pasting activity.

I've decided to post Chloe's A0 notebooking pages as a separate post.  Look for those tomorrow.

Charlotte Update

Little Miss Grade 1 has now done the first 6 weeks.

I've tried to keep things not too overwhelming, but at the same time, give her a decent amount of school to do each day.

{ English }

Charlotte is now up to LTR 105 - which is half way through the program.  At this point I'm thinking that I'll need to start slowing it down a little - as it does tend to move along rather quickly.  She needs a little time to slow down so that she can build her fluency.  Sure, she can sound out those words in the story, but she needs time to work on getting a smooth consistency in delivery of the sentences so that it actually sounds like a story rather than a list of words.

and because she is in 105, she has also started their Language Arts books as well.

{ Maths }

She's doing awesome with it and just finished lesson 60 yesterday.  At this point we've only just introduced subtraction.

{ History }

This year I have SOTW I back out and in use, and Charlotte really likes it.  I don't make her do a ton of narrations or anything - yet - just nice and easy - listen to the story, and do a little something to leave a paper trail.

We do SOTW on Mondays and Wednesdays.

On Fridays we do a little from this other book.

{ Science }

We've moved into the next topic.  The first topic we looked at living and non-living.  This new topic we are looking at habitats.

{ Cursive Handwriting }

Yep, we've started that too.

{ Bible }

We are making some really good progress through our Bible read aloud.  This week was perfect as it coincided with SOTW!

Yes, so that is todays little catch up on where Charlotte is 6 weeks into the school year.  Obviously there's a heap of little things that round out the days that I haven't included, but I thought I'd still share some of it.

Week 33

Today the girls will be doing a happy dance.  They'll be working on the last page that I want from them from their spelling workbooks.  No more formal spelling workbook work for the remainder of the year. 

They'll have new books - leveled up, in January.

As some of you know, Hannah { Miss 4 } in particular, and I should also include Phebe { Miss 6 } because she's doing the same work, are doing awesome in the maths department.

This is Hannah's page from earlier in the week.  They've also been working on borrowing back { subtraction }.  I am so amazed at how quickly they caught on to it.

Chloe is doing extremely well with her Maths too.  She's working on her 9x tables.  As a side note, do any of you remember earlier in the year when I had to make a deal with her because the workload was just too taxing?  Well, it isn't anymore, and she does her full lesson now without any problems.

And now that the weather is warming up again I've moved the girls back out into the front room to do school.  Here's our basic set up.

You can see my teachers manuals for the Language Arts as well.  I cannot tell you how much these have helped, saved my sanity, encouraged me, taught me, and done so much good for us.  This way my children can have an awesome private school education without the expense.

Phebe finished 109.  Technically we still have one more workbook that she can do.

Hannah finished Learn To Read 106.

I also went shopping........... and I bought 3 more black line masters.  I'm still thinking that I need to cut what I spend, and we're getting there, but yeah, I obviously haven't got to zero just yet.  Two science, and one Australian History.  So, this week my photocopier got a good old fashioned workout.  More on those another day though.

My timers have also been getting a good workout this week too.  I sometimes forget how valuable and useful they are.  Definite keepers.  They help me, help the girls keep focus, and set time boundaries.

However, spelling and penmanship are also included in these workbooks.  I just like to do other stuff in addition to these.

Current Reader for Chloe {8}

Chloe has just recently finished reading these two books:

Grade 2 reading.

We've been reading them at a much faster pace than would otherwise be expected.

Now she is currently reading:

Quite a little step up in how many words appear on a page.

Grade 3 reading.

Includes poems throughout as well.

Week 13

This week we returned to our normal school schedule after having 2 weeks off.  Chloe started 305 for English.  We are almost half way through the course already, the year is going so quickly.

Hannah started Rod and Staff Unit 2 { for reading but not the workbook }.  I've been really swamped out with the other children and life in general, so I'm currently going to be minimizing Hannah's workload.

She also had a little fun with making words on our magnetic trays. I've since bought a nice big pink one for her to try out and use.

Phebe also started a new reader and workbook.

Science went well this week.  We've only done 2 lessons but the girls have already learnt some cool things.

I'm wondering if we should make a vocabulary book or not - since I know that there is a HEAP of vocabulary to come, or should we just ENJOY the book for what it is?

I managed to get some nice photos of the baby - one while she was reading, and one while she was playing "librarian" and pushing a trolley of books around until she was ready to put them back on the shelf.  Notice her handful of Pony Pal books. 

Phebe continued to work on through her CLE maths module.  As it turns out it has been a very good fit for her.

Phebe also worked on this throughout the week.  Today she got to color in the whale.  

I've been trying to encourage the girls to start giving me their oral narrations for me to write down for them to copy, but today they struggled, so I just gave them copywork out of the Activity book.  I love that I can fall back to that when we are tired and can't think for ourselves.

We have now done the first 5 lessons from Life of Fred - Butterflies.  The girls have been doing great with learning to skip count by 5's and as a result are reading clock times much easier.  We've also started skip counting by 2's.  { We've obviously looked at these before, but are doing the rounds with them again because that's what are in the books. }  

Overall, this week has been a bit of hard work.  I am really feeling the weight of the 6 children - with 4 of them being full time homeschooling.  { The additional two little boys have gone home to mum permanently - so that is a good thing and has made the load a little lighter. }  I'm also struggling with a little resentment over the fact that hubby WANTS me to homeschool but has totally abdicated and left me to the job by myself.  I don't feel overly confident, or feel that I have enough mental stamina for the highschoolers.  Sure, I can provide work.  Yep, I can read and follow teachers manuals, but it's the overall process.  The time involved.  There is a LOT to run around in circles with.  I'm tired.
