Noah finished off his little Penguin today.

Months of the Year Wall Chart and Bookmark

When you make the Months of the Year into a chart for the wall.......... and you use the answer key as a bookmark.

Yep.

I just printed out the Months of the Year pages that I wanted, cut the top off the bottom section and taped it up to join it to the top section.  All good to go.  All I have to do now is find a wall space to put it for practice.

I also came to the thought of using the answer key as a book mark.  Super happy with that idea.  :)

Penguin Days of the Week

Today I'm sharing a Penguin Days of the Week, Months of the Year Center Pack.

I thought now would be the perfect time to add it to our little Penguin Lapbook project as an extra, on the side activity for the remainder of the month.

It comes with 2 anchor charts;

this is the Days of the Week chart.

There are 4 worksheet options for practicing the Days of the Week.

This makes it particularly useful when you need to do the activity again a couple of times.

Just print up the days of the week on colored paper and cut and paste into order.

There are also 4 different options for the Months of the Year worksheets as well.

For differentiation, just have the children write them instead of cut and pasting them.

A couple of fill in your own dates for August.

Some hand cards for ordering.  There's a 2nd set also included in the file as well.

And finally, we have a Months of the Year set of cards as well.

If you print the cards in color I highly recommend laminating them for longer usage.

Yeah, so that's pretty much it.  In hindsight I should have made this earlier in the month when I first did the Penguin Lapbook, but never mind, better late than never!

Interactive Penguin Lapbook

Today I wanted to share my latest lapbook project, Penguins.

The cover.

When you first open it up.

4 Vocabulary words to the left, a reading passage on the first insert, and a compare and contrast on the right hand side flap.

The vocabulary is done with little matchbooks.  Just cut and paste the definitions in, or copy them in.

I've also included a cut and paste list of labels for the compare and contrast.

The passage.

Turn the passage over and the cloze is underneath.  There is also a secondary cloze available for older children.

The mini books and pockets on the top of the right hand insert.

My opinion flip book - which will walk your student through on how to formulate an opinion paragraph.

A Penguin log book to keep track of all the books you look at or read about Penguins.

A tri-fold can, have, are for All About Penguins.

Lastly, a set of 8 life cycle sequence cards.

Life cycle of the Penguin.  Cut and paste under the correct picture, or copy.

Label and color the Penguin.

I also added the remaining 2 vocabulary words underneath the Label the Penguin.

Lift up the middle insert and this is where I put the writing portion.  It is situated in the middle back part.

This is the Art activity.  Cut and paste your penguins on { just print an extra set of sequence cards } and color.

Copy work for the writing.  If your child can write without help, by all means, but if they just need copywork - I have provided 8 details to help them along.

Yes, so I am super happy about how this one came out.  Charlotte and I are currently working through it already.  It is designed to take 2 weeks, but it might take us a little longer, depending on how many extra little crafts I add and what we read.

Charlotte Started a New Book

Today Charlotte started reading a new book.

I love how they separate the syllables for easy sounding.

and she also started a new lapbook on Penguins.

Before we got to the cloze there was a passage that I read to her.

Penguin Masks and Chart

Like a lot of things at my house it takes us a while to cycle through things thoroughly.  Always lots to do, not enough time though.

Here's some additional Penguin work that the girls had their hands on.

Penguin Masks.  We tried adding the beaks but that proved to be more troublesome than without, so they didn't last long.

They were a hit though and kept the girls interested for an afternoon.  :o)

Today we had these out:

The idea is to make a nice long poster ( 3 x A4 landscape ) of different types of Penguins.  It's a color by code.  The girls started, but haven't finished yet.

I got these from a Scholastic book that only cost me $ 1.  Yep,  bargain right?  You should see what else is in the book.  We shall be having more Penguin projects for a while yet.  :o)

Penguin Day Packet

It was a bit odd giving you all a Day Packet on Bats the other day when considering that most schools are either doing a winter or a summer theme.

So today I'm going to give you a little Penguin Day Packet.  Just click on the worksheet to download.

5. Four pages of photo instructions on how to assemble the pack.  { I did cheat a little on this one - I just copied over the Bat instructions - which are going to be the SAME. }  This was good as it saved me some considerable time.  :o)

The Penguin.

I've got a HUGE post for you today~!!  Lots of show and tell with this theme - even though it only took a couple of days to do in real life.  We read 3 books, did some crafts, and did a little writing.

Here are the books we read:

100 Facts on Penguins.  I loved the pictures in this book.  I also love the idea of short numbered paragraphs.  The only thing I DIDN'T like in the book was that it added evolutionary rubbish - which we know is NOT fact, but rather opinion based on pseudo science.  It's a bit ironic that they add such "hear say" especially since the book is supposed to be about FACTS.  But that's ok - I can read around things like that.  But if I ever want to give this book to my children to read I'll be using a little black marker at certain points in the book.

 Now here is a gorgeous book~!!   I totally recommend this one.  Completely safe for any child.  They just stick to the FACTS.

 I love how they wrote and had illustrations on the left hand pages while on the right hand side they had REAL life photography.  So beautiful.

 Such a delight to read, and it didn't take long either.

The third book we read was this one.  A living book of the life of a Penguin.  This too is also recommended~!! 

Now we come to the crafts.  You can't do a "theme" on an animal without a couple of crafts, it just wouldn't be right~!!

So, we used an old 2 litre orange juice carton.  Wrapped it in black paper.  Then added the white belly, feet, wings, beak, and eyes.

 It didn't take too long and was fairly easy to put together.

 Basically we free styled it.  There wasn't any pattern.

Another craft that we did was a paper piecing of a penguin.

Here is Hannah holding the one that I did with her.  She might be able to cut her own hair but she hasn't really worked out how to cut that well with paper, so I did most of that with her.

And now for Chloe, Miss Grade 2 - who ended up with a little book on her Penguin.

I thought I'd help her out when we got to the cover part with some coloring.

 Here's Chloes paper piecing of a Penguin.  They love to eat fish.

On the right hand side we have a labeling exercise which I got from:  Mrs Kramer at Kindergarten Crayons.

We used this little page to list things about Penguins that we knew.  Well, I actually let Chloe write what she knew.  That's why Penguins can have "friends", and they can "help other penguins".  LOL  If you'd like a copy of this one you can get it here: Penguins

And now the drum roll please, since I am sooooo happy that it came out this well~!!  Getting children up and writing isn't always easy, and when they do it's so awesome to be able to see them make that progress.
