A Lesson in Grade 3 English

Well, I'm sitting here this afternoon wondering what to post for tomorrow when the thought came that I should share with you what our princess Chloe ( 7 ) did today in her Grade 3 English lesson.  { For reference: she uses Christian Light Education, Language Arts 3. }  It is quite a cheap program for what you get in it.  Pretty good economically, especially if you have multiple children that you only need to add new workbooks for.  VERY academic and thorough too.

We cover quite a lot in each lesson.  There is always some revisional work as well.

Today we started off with what a Topic Sentence was.  Then she answered which phrases were true about a topic sentence.

This isn't the first time Chloe has seen this topic though.  I bought an AWESOME book on paragraphs that we've been going though separately.  I just wanted to do a few more things in that before I did show and tell on it though.

Then she read another paragraph and underlined the topic sentence.

Then we worked on the 'We Remember' section.  Today she was writing T / F about paragraphs.  Just things that one needs to know about them.

Then we reviewed parts of a letter.  There are 5 parts that she needs to know.

They also added a quick review - underline the correct answer for where a glossary and an index would be located.

Then we moved over to Penmanship.   This is also included in her Language Arts course.  Today she practiced capital C and E.  Then the words: Chosen and Echo in cursive.

Finally we ended with a whole page of spelling work using the list words.  One question included writing out a 3 syllable spelling word.

She also had to write out her list words separately in an exercise book and choose two words and write sentences for them.

For reading, which is considered separate once again, she read a story from one of the Bible Nuture Readers from Rod and Staff.  We have the workbooks that go with them, but by the time we waddle through with what I've got organized for the day, the day is pretty much gone, so they are just sitting in a drawer waiting for a rainy day.

Grade 3 Reader Units 1-3

I really, really, really love the Language Arts course that she uses,  oh and the reader series too - which is a separate thing.  Everything is there.  I even have the teachers manual, so I'm NEVER wondering or lost.  Having a boxed curriculum takes ALL the stress out.  And as you can see I mix and match a little too.

I hope you enjoyed hearing about how our lesson in Grade 3 English went today.

Just click on any of the pictures to go and see more about these products.  CLE have a LOT of sample pages that you can download too. Their samples are lessons taken straight out of the workbooks.  They will give you a really good feel for how the lessons work.

It was a bit odd giving you all a Day Packet on Bats the other day when considering that most schools are either doing a winter or a summer theme.

So today I'm going to give you a little Penguin Day Packet.  Just click on the worksheet to download.

Includes:

Snowy Day Art

Today I have a half paint / half paper tearing art project for show and tell.

The actual work for these pieces were a little time consuming since we had to paint the background and then while it was drying do our tearing.  We also did a couple of other things in between too.

All four pieces.

By: Chloe, Phebe, Hannah, and one done by myself.

Bible & Memory Work

I read from this Childrens Bible:

It's an ok version.  5 stories a week for 52 weeks.  Beautiful illustrations.  But it will make you completely and utterly biblically illiterate if this is the only thing you read.  It also misses a TON in between information that leads to each next story too.  Very jumpy.  It's like there is no cohesion.  No smooth transition from story to story.  Each story is a short highlight stand alone.

This week the girls did:

The Lord replied,
My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.

They also worked on their mini New Testament copywork bibles as well.

Oh and Hannah did a catch up activity.

And mummy worked on:

Psalm 71

In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion.

Deliver me in thy righteousness, and cause me to escape: incline thine ear unto me, and save me.

This week I'll be working on:

Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my fortress.

Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.

Don't forget that if you'd like to join in with memorizing Psalm 71 - please do~!!

Week 3

We've come to the end of Week 3.

Here are some highlights from this week.

Hannah ( 3y9m ) finished up LTR 102

Here's her Review:

She does awesome at sounding the words out.

Then she got 97%.

We started to do some REAL maths from her Rod and Staff Grade 1 maths book.  She's done a number of pages since this was taken.

Hannah also did some spelling.  I just pick out the words/phrases that I want her to work on and put them in an exercise book for her to copy.

We did this activity.  I have a little plastic freezer box that I put the current cards and letter pieces in.  That way she doesn't really have to go digging all that far to get them together.  Then when we are ready I'll just swap over the cards and letters for new ones.

Chloe 7 did particularly well this week with her spelling.

She did one day with cursive for her list words.  Then on other days just did her list in the normal style and format of list, then added two sentences.  She added some pictures of her own accord, which I thought was a nice touch.

On another day - same format, and two sentences.  Again she added pictures for the sentences.

Phebe 5 doesn't do spelling until she gets to Language Arts 106.  She's just finished 104.

I suppose I could give her some spelling in the same format that I give Hannah, but I just haven't gotten around to it this year - yet.

Now even though she isn't doing much on the spelling front she is totally kicking butt in the maths department.

We're just finishing up week 3 but in her maths book she is up to week 5.  Yep, a couple of weeks ahead.

Phebe scored 79% on the final test in Language Arts 104,

and she had these as well.

A project that I thought might be fun for the girls, but once I had done the model thought, no way, they currently don't have the scissor skills or patience for was:

So, I'll have to put this idea away for a rainy day in the future.

History this Week

History this Week:  SOTW III, Chapter 5.

Hideyoshi from Japan.

A map of Japan.

And some copywork.

* * * * * * * *

The Big Boys worked from MOH III.

Did you know that  you can get "listening guides" for MOH III?  I'm part of a yahoogroup that have them in their files.

They are excellent just as worksheets~!!

The Big Boys just fill them out after they've done their "reading".

Here's this weeks and next weeks all printed out ready to go.  They are usually a couple of pages at least each.  Often with maps or pictures as well.

This week I'm going to link up with:

I hope you will join us.
