{ Week 19 }

This week we began a new book in our read alouds:  

The Story Book of Science by Henri Jean Fabre.  So far it's been a great hit.  The girls are really loving it.  It can be found for free at mainlesson.com, just click the cover to go there.  I also managed to secure a very nice full pdf version from online as well, { that's what I printed - it just saved me a ton of time instead of getting it all in piece meal from the Baldwin Project page. }




Also, this week I purchased the next ELA Interactive Notebook by Mandy Gregory in the series for the girls - we are using it for some of their activity time.  { Each day I give the girls a different worksheet activity - basically some busy work to consolidate or review things they should be able to do.  I use all different worksheets, from all different scources, and this week some of it will be from this book. }  Just click the cover to go and check it out on TpT.

A meal at my place, no meat, just lots of vegetables and noodles.

Now that the girls have pretty much finished reading and writing their way through a heap of their text book I gave them all a copy of the test booklets to complete.  I've only scheduled a page per lesson time, slow and steady wins the race.  I've also told them that it's open book.  So they can use their text book to help find the answers IF they want to.  But you know children, rush, rush, rush - no time for that mum!  They just want to get through it whether its right or wrong.  If they get too many wrong I might get ugly on them though.  Yep, I'm scoring them!  I have the answers in the teachers manuals.  ha ha ha.

Noah asleep in his walker.  It's amazing how quickly they fall asleep.  One minute you can hear them making noise and the next, asleep.  After a quick photo it was off to the cot for him.

Thought I'd encourage the maths along by using a white board.

The 6 year old ended up taking longer.

The 10 year old ended up getting her work done quicker.

Although to be fair, Miss 6 did 8 lessons in 4 days this week, so I should totally cut her some slack considering her level and output.

This week we worked on poetry for copywork.

I like how the stories are short.  I also like that they have questions at the end.

{ Letter m }

This week I decided to do a letter that Charlotte was already pretty familiar with,
the letter { m }.

Charlotte loved this page.  It was easy, and fun for her.

See the little girl mermaid?  Yep, that's Charlotte, if you ask her!

This turned out to be a little harder than we thought

{ fine motor grasping skills need to be developed }.

A new activity; roll the die and trace the letter that corresponds to the die.  When all the upper OR lower case letters are done, the game is over - regardless of the remaining other case.

Just practice pages.

I LOVED that I just gave this following worksheet to her WHOLE and she went off and this was the result:  completed without assistance.  Yay~!!

What you can't see is that I wrote a { m } in silver pencil for her to trace.  :o)

That's how she managed to get those m's looking so good.

It's all about helping them have "successful" learning.

{ Week 18 }

Homer

Homer was a bard.  He was a bard because he made books.  People liked him.  And he was a boy.  He will be here if it was the olden days.

Homer made stories when he was young.  He had some fun in his life.  We do not live in books.  He has already died.

Homer was big.  He was kind.  He was happy.  I love doing this.

This week we started SHAKESPEARE!

What am I doing?  ha ha ha.

Nevertheless, we begin with The Tempest.

We also continue with our beloved Plutarch:  Marcus Crassus.

As a side note, did you know that he also wrote 5 hefty volumes on Morals?  Yeah, me either, but I am super interested in them.

Now, I always find it easier to start new things after returning from holidays.  So on our return Chloe started these two books:

This one I picked up for only $16.50 in a Noosa second hand book shop.  In great condition too!!

Something that's been on the shelves for years.  Chloe will be reading it for Bible time.

I also got quite interested in Samuel Pepys due to Jeanne's post on her blog { A Peaceful Day }.  And low and behold when I got home I found this on my shelf.  I've had it for years and never knew how awesome and handy it would come.  Yay!!  Additionally, I've also ordered myself a copy of his Diaries.  Can't wait for when we finally get to reading it.

Nature Study this week:

I think the girls had fun discovering how a seed splits and allows the root to grow out and begin a plant.

Copywork by Chloe.  In many ways I think this "speeds" up our English lessons.  As in, the time it takes is actually less than what we would normally spend.   The girls find it to be much easier, but also, on the other hand, more instructional than the other different types of English lessons as well.

There's a lady called Amy on TpT that does these Bible Notebooks.  I've purchased a few of her mini lessons.  I really love them, and will buy more.  Here is one: Solomon, we did this one today.  For a $1, you can't go wrong.  I highly recommend them.  :o)

More Bargain Book Finds

I found these two Roald Dahls for a dollar each.

Perfect, mint, unread condition.

I also got these two books - 50c each in my wanderings.

Sometimes I really have to wonder why people by books.  Do they buy them with the best of intentions, but never get to reading them?

Another mint condition, basically unread book.

I did laugh at the content though.  The book LOOKS like it's designed for adults, but he writes as if it's for children, short, very short easy to read chapters.  It's quite a lengthy book too, coming to 346 pages.

I also found this gorgeous little { A4 sized } book too:

What caused me to purchase this book were the gorgeous full color photographs throughout.

  In addition to the flowers, were the copious beautiful nature study sketches.  What better way to inspire nature drawing than with high quality examples.

A lovely bargain for only $2.00.  Yep.

The Human Body

One should really visit second hand shops more often - especially and most importantly, the ones that keep books.

I managed to pick up this beautiful hard cover in awesome condition for a mere $5.  Dust jacket and all.
